We’re seeing more and more women entering what is usually considered an all-male sport – football – and this Super Bowl is no different. In a historic move, Sarah Thomas will be the first female to officiate the NFL’s biggest game.

Thomas made history in 2015, when she entered the league and became the first female official. She’s continued to break gender norms since, officiating her first NFL playoff game in 2019.

“I never set out to be the first in any of this,” she told NFL Network. “But knowing the impact that I am having on not just my daughter, but young girls everywhere, women everywhere, when I get on that field and I take it all in, I know that I’m probably going to get a little teary eyed.”

Her daughter will be watching her mom in action from home and knows she won’t be the only young girl feeling inspired.
